People Who Make a Difference: Mark Hyman, DDS
Is he a dentist who speaks? Is he a speaker with a dental practice? Either way you look at it, Mark Hyman, DDS, is a highly successful dentist and sought after speaker. When I think of my long-time friend Mark, two words come to mind: engaging leader and advocate. Mark has built and sustained a highly successful dental practice through applying principles of workplace engagement. He is one of the engaging leaders often quoted in my upcoming book Your Employees Have Quit—They Just Haven’t Left. When I asked Mark to tell me about one way his engaging workplace culture differs from typical business, he said, “We recognize the personal challenges that all of our staff wrestle with, and we don’t shy away from it. I never ask my team to leave their personal problems at home. That’s a dysfunctional concept. They understand that they can bring their whole self to work. I listen to them and understand. Then we get to work and make magic happen.”
Mark has also been an advocate for my work. He has personally had me speak about workplace engagement with key dental associations and referred business to me. He does not merely say, “Be well my friend,” rather he puts action behind his words as he helps others grow and succeed. A native of Greensboro, NC, Mark received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his dental degree from the UNC School of Dentistry. Following a four month internship in Israel, he completed the two-year Oral Medicine/General Practice Residency at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill and is now on the surgical staff at Moses Cone Health System. He was elected President of the Guilford County Dental Society in 1991, teaches at the Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, Florida, is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the UNC School of Dentistry, and has lectured at many national and international dental meetings. Mark was voted one of the top 100 leaders in Dental Continuing Education by Dentistry Today magazine. He was honored by the North Carolina Dental Society as Young Dentist of the Year in 1995. He has received the Mastership Award of the Academy of General Dentistry. He and his wife, Anita, have three fabulous children.
